The story of Mass Effect: Andromeda is set about 600 years after the events of the Mass Effect trilogy, but the characters have no knowledge of anything that happened in the Milky Way from about the time of Mass Effect 2. In other words, Andromeda is a very ambitious game, and while its technical limitations might prevent it fully realizing its vision, that doesn’t mean this game is the failure many people made it out to be. While this pales in comparison to the likes of Skyrim or The Witcher 3, it’s almost double the length of the original Mass Effect games and you also have to consider that Andromeda includes a fully-fledged co-operative multiplayer mode similar to that featured in Mass Effect 3. Indeed, considering it was developed from the ground-up in a relatively short space of time, Andromeda contains a lot of original content, with the main story plus side missions taking about 70 hours. The game does suffer from the odd freeze or crash, but that’s a pretty common problem these days, especially for a game as large and ambitious as Andromeda. The developer, Bioware, were able to fix some of the most obvious technical issues in a series of post-launch downloadable patches, and playing the game now it’s honestly hard to see what all the fuss was about. There’s no question that Andromeda could have benefited from more development time. This would have been a hell of a challenge for a game of this scale, especially considering that the developers were working with an unfamiliar engine, EA’s Frostbite, which was not designed for use in RPGs. Although five years had passed since the release of Mass Effect 3, reports suggest that Andromeda’s development cycle was truncated by a series of technical and creative challenges that meant the game was actually built in about a year and a half. Unfortunately, Andromeda’s release was dogged by controversy and a mass of complaints about technical problems, particularly with the game’s facial animations. Mass Effect: Andromeda, the fourth entry in the franchise, was accordingly much-anticipated ahead of its release in early 2017. The original Mass Effect trilogy, released between 20, remains one of the most popular and iconic series of role-playing games ever.
